25th Annual Nautical Coast Cleanup

13 Sep 2020 12:00 | Michael Droogleever (Administrator)

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI. – Sunday, September 13, 2020 – One of Lake St. Clair's most notable events occurs annually in late Spring along its western shorelines. Since 1996, the City of St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee and volunteers throughout the area have organized and participated in the region's most extensive coastal clean-up, resulting in – literally – tons of trash and debris removal. The effort has removed over 795 tons of trash and debris over the lifetime of the event. This one-day concentrated effort intends to bring the community together, advocate for our natural resources, and make for a notable beginning to the summer. This year, however, the Clean-up was postponed--much like many gatherings--due to the pandemic-related restrictions.

The downstream location of this coastline historically has shown an extensive collection of debris. Within the city's limits, four public areas target its beaches and shorelines -- Veterans Memorial Park, Blossom Heath Park, Champine Park, and Chapaton Retention Basin.

The We Are Here Foundation started the Clean-up in 1996 and has seen continual growth in its volunteerism. The community is encouraged to participate, especially waterfront homeowner associations, school environmental groups, local businesses, and other community organizations. Participating organizations find the event to be an excellent team-building activity. Privately owned waterfront property owners and their associated homeowner associations are encouraged to participate in their respective areas. Trash pick-up and diving services are available, and private participants can coordinate with the Committee.

The Jefferson Yacht Club is hosting as the Clean-up's headquarters, where participants may register (online preferred) and can retrieve lunch.  Procedures and considerations are in place for social-distancing practices.  Sponsors graciously provide complimentary food and refreshments, and a cash bar is available.  Lunch with musical entertainment concludes the Clean-up.  More information is available on the Committee's website: www.scswec.org
